Making Video 3rd Assignment – Reflection

VIDEO BRIEF

1.What is your chosen digital media context (choose one, it can also be a hybrid of two- for example AI and Surveillance are commonly paired together. Another option would be the rise of VR and the resulting digital divides between people who can afford and those who can’t)- Surveillance, VR/AR, Artificial Intelligence, Digital divides

– My chosen topic is:’ The rapid spread of AI’s practical applications is not only occurring for different reasons, but also entails different implications’.

2. What’s the goal of this video? Why are you making the video in the first place?

The aim of this video is to access to more in-depth information about AI, what benefits can AI brings to the human community, what advantages and disadvantages AI has, especially in the Education industry.

3. Who is your intended audience for this video? Who are they? What are their media consumption patterns like? Who or what is influential in their culture subculture? What motivates them (gets them out of bed each morning?

My target audiences are the people who are interested in digital technology and attempt to discover the AI’s practical applications.

7.Next we think about the objective of our video. What is your approach to the topic?

a) expository to describe or explain a topic

– In the second assignment, we were asked to produce a video with similar topics but more generally. In this assignment, the topic needs to be more specifically with a certain target, which is how AI’s applications could affect humanity.

b) analytical to break down a topic into parts, and then exploring the relationships between each part

– The video consists two main parts: the advantages of AI in education and the disadvantages of AI in education, taking China as an example. The two parts provided the audience both point of views and let them make comparison.

c) persuasive to change or reform attitudes, opinions, behaviors, values, worldview through voluntary compliance.

d) argumentative to provide a set of reasons to support a point of view, truth or theory. Or to challenge the degree of truth in another statement, truth, or point of view.

– After reading the comments on the YouTube site, I got a more general look on this topic, since I have always been on the side where I support AI’s practical use without any doubt.

8. What are the key takeaways of the video? What should viewers learn from watching it?

– AI could be very dangerous if humans rely too much on it, conceivably in the future, humans and robots will probably have to depend on each other rather than humans controlling robots. Students need to be developed to the fullest, not because of their achievements but to turn themselves into robots.

9. What’s your call-to-action? What do we want your viewers to do after they’ve finished watching the video? To support a cause, to click on a link, to watch another video, to read a book, etc.

– AI is a huge leap forward for humanity, it really helps us with a lot of things like education, economy, culture and health. But if we misuse it or use it in the wrong way, it is likely that the situation will be reversed in the future, humans will be victims of AI.

REFLECTION

To meet the assignment’s requirements of making a 7-minute long educational video, I first started off by making a detailed plan on what contents I need to bring into the video, how I am going to do and a checklist of things that need to be done. Although there are several ways to start a plan but personally, I prefer writing them down by hand, it helps me to add more words or fix mistakes in the easiest way.

After finishing the plan, I started writing a script based on what I have learned then took references from the resources I have mentioned above. To complete the process of preparing, I practiced reading the script for few times then started recording myself reading the script using my phone. Then I transferred the audio file to my computer and use it as a editing material.

The visual materials I used in my video are from a website called Pexels. They provide an absolutely free large number of images and videos to serve the purpose of study and work. I have downloaded many videos with related keywords such as “Technology”, “Artificial Intelligence”, “Education” and use them to edit by a software called Adobe Premiere Pro, which I found suitable for both beginning and expert editors. Eventually, the background music that I chose in the video is called “Lavish” by CGBeats was under Creative Commons Licenses (CC BY-SA 4.0).

To provide a definition of AI, its pros and cons and its influence on many situations in many different aspects (economy, political, education).

9. What’s your call-to-action? What do we want your viewers to do after they’ve finished watching the video? To support a cause, to click on a link, to watch another video, to read a book, etc.

To raise awareness on the effects of AI.

REFLECTION:

To produce a qualified product for the second assignment of “Making Video” class, students were asked to produce a video with a variety of options on the topic. The topic was chosen is “Artificial Intelligence”.

To be more specific, the content breaks down into three parts:

The first part is the definition of Artificial Intelligence. Secondly, how Artificial Intelligence has a huge impact on our life and thirdly it is the advantages and disadvantages of Artificial Intelligence.

Before starting to film and editing the video, I start with a detailed plan on what needed to be done such as: a list of things that need to be done, my goals of making the video and a script for the video.

Doing research on many resources, there is one that I found useful to meet the requirement of using at least one academic resource and providing a further insight not only the benefits of AI but also the danger, the e-book is titled Artificial Intelligence: Rise of the Lightspeed Learners by Jennings C.

To be more visually detailed, I made a story boards describe how I want the video to be produced.

Then write a script base on the resource that I have mentioned above.

After doing the paper works, I start recording myself reading the script using the recorder of my phone.

I use a software called Premiere Pro to edit because I found this software is suitable for both beginners and experts with lots of technique to help produce a video.

The music I use in the video named ‘Pretend’ by CGBeats was under Creative Commons Licenses (CC BY-SA 4.0).

The videos I used to produce the video was:

Video by cottonbro from Pexels

Video by Bedrijfsfilmspecialist.nl from Pexels

Video by Pressmaster from Pexels

Video by Pixabay from Pexels

Video by Athena from Pexels

All under Creative Commons Licenses (CC BY 4.0)

After finishing with the edits, I upload the video on YouTube then embed into a blog post and upload a Twitter post.

What I have learned?

Through out the process of making this video, I have learned quite a few necessary information about AI that I have not acknowledged before and learned how to use and editing video with Premiere Pro.

Making Video First Assignment Reflection

To complete the first assignment of “Making Video” class, students were expected to present a one-to-two-minute video introducing about themselves.

Before starting off to the filming process, I first wrote down a detailed plan which was diving into two main parts including the content of the video and the requirements to produce the video steps by steps.

After finishing with the plan, I put down all the words into vision by making a storyboard to have a further insight on what exactly need to be filmed and set up.

The storyboard consists 11 frames with different drawings and angles of the shot to help filming more easy and detailed.

The filming process is a combination of both our-door and in-door shooting. To produce a qualified video for the assignment, I use Adobe Premium Pro which is an editing software that I found is absolutely suits both amateur and expert.

For the intro, I film an A-roll shot with myself talking directly to the camera and use effects to make an introduction sequence to give the video a more up-beat feeling and eye-catching.

Subsequently, I used a bit of an animation for the map to give the video a fresher view.

I use the recorder on my phone to record the audio of the script has been written before, insert them through B-rolls to make the video less boring and so that I can give the audience an exterior view of both Melbourne and my hometown – Vietnam.

After finishing editing, I saved the video as AVI format then export it. This is where the trouble begins, my computer faces a crash so the Premier Pro program has to stop working, so I have to do the other half of the video in a rush time.

Additionally, the music I use for the background music is called Last Summer which I found is incredibly catchy and could help to uplifting the mood for viewers and Lavish by GCBEATS which has a relaxing vibe with it making the audience feel calm and focusing more on the video, both songs were under creative commons license (CC BY-SA 4.0).

In the process of accomplishing the video, there was both challenge and achievement. The filming process has so much fun since I have a chance moving around the city. Filming in public is a total new experience for me since I have never walking and filming at the same time. The challenging part is the editing, there are lots of new things I have not experienced with Premier Pro software, so I have had a hard time keeping everything under my control.

The downside of my video is when exporting it, the format and codec seems not matching so the quality exported as 480p was lower than I expected, which does not reach the requirement of a HD video.

Even though the result came out was not as good as from what I have expected because of the rush of time for the final result, but I am satisfied as I have gained more experiences in both filming and editing.

My Online Identity

Identities are an ongoing process of locating ourselves and marking out who we are and the relationships we get involved. (Carah & Louw, 2015, p.168)

Nowadays, the definition of identity has been transformed by the development of social media and the Internet transmission. Now, identity is no longer a birth certification or the personality of a person we talk face-to-face, identity can be rated by online identity – how we act online on our social media platforms.

There are hundred ways to show our online identities, some use their own names, some create nicknames to suit the “theme” they are trying to convey. For myself, my online identity displays my true self, not a character that I made up for business or marketing purposes.

The “self-presentation” on the Internet is not completely engaged in to the people in the real world, but build-up with conversations, social expectations and others people’s identities. (Brown, 2015, p. 221)

The online world gives us many opportunities to interact and share with others. But it is also a place that nothing is temporary and cannot be recover. Everything you do, write or say online can be seen even if you delete it. It is easy for others to copy, save and forward your information to anyone.

My motto is not to say or share inappropriate words online. Not only will it ruin your identity in the present, but it can also worsen your image in the eyes of prospective employers or future employers if they have ever seen your online profile. Even if those sensitive images or words are on a private page, they can be hacked or copied and forwarded on cyberspace.

The more we get into social media and trying to establish our online identities, the more pressures we get, especially with those celebrities or social media influencers. We have to undergo the criticism from strangers and being insecure about our safety.

Moreover, “Fear of missing out” – also known as “FOMO” affects us sometimes. It is defines as the feeling of insecure that something interesting is happening elsewhere without our representation. (Dodgson, 2018)

Social media are often maintain this anxiety, when you see pictures of your acquaintances having enjoyable time without you, and the feeling can be all-consuming.

Stressed (https://bit.ly/2MC1K3e) by Johnathan Moore (CC BY-NC 2.0)

Based on the report of Eric Barker, people who are already unsatisfied may get more impacts of FOMO. Take for instance, facing with a huge amount of Instagram or Facebook posts about other people’s lives, it can feel like you are always an out-cast. (Barker, 2016)

Sadness (https://bit.ly/2MDoP5w) by Tania Tebaldi (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0)

Having FOMO can lead to negative results such as depression, lack of sleep and insecurity about worthiness.

There are ways to overcome FOMO, firstly is to use social media effectively and selectively, try your best not to compare yourself with other people. Secondly, having a stable mindset, control the attention and not to let useless contents be time-consuming. Easier said than done, but if there is a will, there is a way.

Instagram

My Instagram illustrates a normal life-style with daily photos that best describes my real personality. One of the photos that I have uploaded is a Thai dish I had with a friend. The other photo was New Year fireworks in Vietnam.

Twitter

On the other hand, Twitter is a platform that I use to professionally showcase photos that are more well-designed and less private than Instagram. The first tweet was when I visited the old Town in Hoi An, Vietnam in Tet holidays, the atmosphere was so much fresher than the city I lived and the scenery was incredibly poetic

The second tweet was about one time that I was wandering on the city of Melbourne. Everything were different compare to my hometown. The people were friendly, the street were clean, the architectures were phonomeno amazing beautiful.

Furthermore, Twitter is also a place where I update the global discoveries, keeping track on current news and adapt more knowledges from all around the world. The tweet was about the Amazon forest was burning and being destroyed.

Although, I am not active on social media but I am trying my best to deconstruct my profile in a professional way because it is beneficial for myself in the future, because this is not about superficial judgements of worth based on appearance. This is about making wise decisions on representing ourselves, based on how rationally our mind works.

We are living in a world where 4.0 industrial revolution is taking the lead, not only economically, but also in the culture, society, including journalism and media.

The development of technology get involved on many factors of journalism in every country, including: producer, reporter, products and the audience.

Conventional texts is replaced by different ranges in media projects such as: YouTube, website and podcast. Therefore, the audiences are able to receive the information directly and easily to express their emotions.

Press products had been changed both criterial and creatively in the content and presentation format in order to be suitable for readers.

With the approachable advancement of touchscreen and social media, making a sudden increase in audiences with access to information through smart devices.

The view of the new digital media as an “optional” is correspondingly replaced with a fundamental change in ways we engaged with all media.

Articles, criticisms of hot issues in society, serious but lengthy commentary lines, are replaced by graphic information and multimedia journalism products.

Readers, values of knowledge, ideology, economic and entertaining values all change. Press agencies are forced to change their production and business processes and methods in a dynamic and creative way.

The publishing industry is quickly moving from paper printing products to electronic technology outcomes such as eBooks are websites for environmental purposes.

With significant changes in the nature of journalism, journalists are like a Swiss army knife, has all these skills handy.

Firstly, it is a must for press agencies’ technical infrastructure to keeps pace with the developing trend of the fourth industrial revolution.

Secondly, journalists are necessarily capable to produce the diverse perspective on media and society being worked.
